The Midwest Nursing Research Society’s annual research conference took place April 6 – 9, 2017. Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing had 17 representatives in attendance, with a number of those representatives presenting at the conference.

Gun Violence: A Public Health Crisis

Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing hosted a screening of the documentary, “Newtown,” which chronicles the aftermath of the mass shooting of 20 elementary school children and six educators in that Connecticut town on Dec. 14, 2012. After the screening panelists provided suggestions on how health care professionals and community constituents could work together to help reduce violence and improve the quality of life in St. Louis.

Horng-Shiuann Wu, PhD, RN, associate professor at Goldfarb, is featured on the cover of the Oncology Nursing Society's magazine for her research on comorbidities in patients with breast cancer. Dr. Wu is only one of two nurses in the country conducting research on this much understudied area involving the health care of patients with cancer. Nursing Graduates Demonstrate Perfect Timing

“As nurse graduates, you have chosen wisely with perfect timing,” said Tim Mislan, BSN, MS-NEC-BS, Missouri Baptist Medical Center vice president and chief nurse executive and a member of Goldfarb’s board of trustees. On Dec. 17, 140 nursing students received their diplomas at the Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing fall commencement event at Powell Hall. The graduating students received Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing degrees before a crowd of their family and friends.

Goldfarb’s program is listed 148 out of 226 online programs in the U.S.

Rankings are based on factors including graduation rates, academic and career support services, faculty credentials and peer reputation.

Tamara Otey, class of 1984 and Carrie Jeffries, class of 1994 & 1996, were honored with the Barnes-Jewish College Alumni Association’s 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award. The two winners of the 2016 Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Awards, Tamara Otey and Carrie Jeffries, have taken quite diverse paths in their extraordinary careers. Venturing from the heart of the heartland each found their way more than 7,000 miles distant, to African nations where both have accomplished significant work.

Not long ago, Goldfarb School of Nursing’s 360 Social program was an idea suggested by a current student. Now it has become a popular, well-attended tradition enjoyed by many.
