Graduate Admissions

Graduate and post-degree certificate applications are reviewed as they are received, and admission decisions are made as each review is completed. Early application is recommended since admissions are closed when each class is filled.

Graduate Admissions Procedures

Applications will be considered when all of the following materials have been completed and submitted to NursingCAS. 

The following will be submitted through the NursingCAS application system:

  • Official transcripts from all institutions where credit was earned
  • Current, unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse in the United States
  • Satisfactory completion of an undergraduate or graduate statistics course
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
  • Barnes-Jewish College recommends that students take the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT)
    • The score requirement for the iBT is 85, with minimum scores of 21 for reading and 23 for writing
    • The score requirement for the computer-based test is 240, with a minimum score of 4.5 on the Test of Written English
    • The score requirement for the paper-based test is 575. TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test and 213 on the computer-based test (required only for applicants whose native language is not English)
  • Additional credentials may also be requested after an initial review of the applicant’s file

Master's Admission Procedures

Please see the below specific requirements for the different programs.

Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP)

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate coursework
  • Satisfactory completion of an undergraduate or graduate statistics course
  • Active RN license in good standing
  • 1 year recent experience as an RN in an ICU setting
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider status
  • An email with additional information regarding compliance requirements will be sent three months prior to the start date
  • Two letters of reference from individuals who can address the applicant's academic and/or clinical performance
  • Personal statement that addresses desired area of specialization, personal attributes that will contribute to successful completion of the program, and career goals.

 

Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGAPNP)

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate coursework
  • Satisfactory completion of an undergraduate or graduate statistics course
  • Active RN license in good standing
  • 1 year of full-time equivalent RN experience in a hospital, out-patient clinic, or other approved health care setting
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) provider status

Nurse Educator

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited institution of higher education.  Post-MSN students require a Master of Science in Nursing degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. 
  • Minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate and undergraduate coursework
  • Satisfactory completion of an undergraduate statistics course
  • Current CV or resume
  • Current, unencumbered licensure RN license in the United States
  • An email with additional information regarding compliance requirements will be sent prior to start date

Post-Master's Certificate Admissions Procedures

Certificate for Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP)

  • Master's of Science in Nursing degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • 1 year recent experience as an RN in an ICU setting

DNP and PhD Admissions Procedures

Please see the below specific requirements for the different programs.

Nurse Anesthesia

  • Baccalaureate or Master’s Degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited college or university (NLNAC or CCNE)
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate and graduate coursework
  • Official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate coursework
  • Two letters of reference from individuals who can address the applicant’s academic and clinical potential
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
  • Current unencumbered, unrestricted Missouri licensure as a Registered Nurse or a multi-state compact license and in good standing. 
  • Prerequisites (undergraduate or graduate, 3 credit hours each and satisfactory grade)
    1. Physics (algebra-based)
    2. Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry
    3. Undergraduate or Graduate Statistics
    4. Anatomy and Physiology (most likely taken in undergraduate nursing) 
  • A personal statement addressing why you want to become a CRNA
  • A minimum of one year of recent critical care nursing experience as a Registered Nurse in a critical care setting in the United States, its territories, or a U.S. military hospital outside of the U.S.
    • Highest priority is given to those who have the most recent work history in a high acuity ICU setting where the applicant is likely to have a broad base of invasive hemodynamic monitoring experience, vasoactive drug administration, and experience monitoring patients on ventilators and adjusting settings. Applicants who work in post-anesthesia care units or emergency rooms will be considered only if the candidate can demonstrate that he/she routinely cares for patients with ventilators, invasive monitors, and vasoactive infusions.
  • Current ACLS and BLS certification throughout enrollment; PALS before beginning clinical activities and throughout enrollment
  • If selected, an on-site interview by the Nurse Anesthesia Admissions Committee
  • If an applicant has previously been enrolled in a nurse anesthesia program, he/she can apply; however, no anesthesia-specific courses will be transferrable
  • Advanced Standing/Transfer Credit: Doctoral-level courses may be accepted for transfer only if approved by the Program Director and Faculty member. A maximum of (9) credits may be accepted for transfer and only those with an A or B may be transferred.  
  • International applicants should check with the Admissions Department for further instructions on admission requirements
  • If accepted, there will be a $1000 non-refundable enrollment deposit for the CRNA program. This deposit amount is only for our CRNA program and is due to the competitive nature of this program. 

Health Systems and Population Health Leadership

  • Official transcripts from all institutions where credit was earned (Please list ALL colleges on the online application)
  • A copy of a current unencumbered RN license in the U.S. or a comparable license
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
  • Strong professional references from two (2) persons who can address academic skills including oral and written communication or clinical competence.
  • Submission of a one or two-page essay of an example of a frequent occurrence in clinical practice that the applicant would like to see improved

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)*

To apply, visit the Graduate School at Washington University's online application.

Due to limited cohort sizes for some MSN concentrations, transferring between concentrations will be considered strictly on a space available and case-by-case basis. Students may find themselves on a waiting list or have a delayed start to the specialty concentration courses. Note: All course grades will be included in the cumulative GPA calculation. The Admissions Department may provide 10-year forgiveness for cumulative GPA calculation. The student must submit a petition for the forgiveness of prior grades to the Admissions Department. This letter will be placed in the student’s file. The GPA will then be appropriately calculated.

All application materials must be received by the deadline dates to be considered for admission. Providing incorrect information concerning previous enrollment at other colleges or universities will void admission to the College.

Admission is valid only for the term stated and may not be used for subsequent terms.
