“In April 2020, Barnes Jewish Hospital – Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College (GSON) certified its agreement to participate in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act: Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund. Goldfarb School of Nursing received a total of $3,445,719 to-date, of which $1,563,092 is to be used to provide CARES Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students and $1,882,627 is to be used for CARES Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Institutions.”
In April 2021, GSON received funding in the amount of $334,771 for student grants under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSAA) under HEERF II. Under this law signed by President Biden, GSON was required to spend the same dollar amount on student grants as they were required under the CARES Act. No new application was required by GSON to receive these funds under the CRRSA Act.
Under the CRRSA Act schools were required to prioritize need, which differed from CARES Act funding. Because institutional funding allocations were set by a formula prescribed in the CRRSA Act that weighed the number of full-time students who were Pell-eligible with consideration for the total population of the College and the number of student not enrolled full-time online before the coronavirus outbreak, FASFA results were considered as a factor of funding determinations.
As of April 12, 2021, Goldfarb School of Nursing issued “EFC-based” grants to 323 total students with an Expected Family Contribution to College (EFC) of $12,000 or less based on 2020-2021 FAFSA information. Of these, 322 students received grants in the amount of $1036.44 and one student in the amount of $1037.32 to total $334,771. The students were notified via email that they were receiving the CRRSA funds for HEERF II.
In May 2021, GSON received $893,550 in HEERF III funds to be issued to students. BJC and GSON are working on a distribution plan to distribute these funds to students in 2022 based on the American Rescue Plan (ARP) requirements.
As of September 23, 2021, Goldfarb School of Nursing issued an additional $500,000 “EFC-based” grants to 314 total students with an Expected Family Contribution to College (EFC) of $12,000 or less based on 2021-2022 FAFSA information (paid out in October 2021). Of these, 312 students received grants in the amount of $1592.35, one student in the amount of $1593.45, and one student in the amount of $1593.35 to total the $500,000. The students were notified via email that they were receiving the CRRSA funds for HEERF II. This $500,000 was utilized from the HEERF II institutional allocation for additional emergency financial aid grants to students.
Every student enrolled at Goldfarb School of Nursing as of February 11, 2022 was awarded $250 from the HEERF III – American Rescue Plan (ARP) institutional funding allocation. There were 632 students who had these funds posted to their student accounts on March 15, 2022 and issued to them at the end of March 2022. The total award amount was $158,000. All students were notified of these funds via email.
As of March 15, 2022, Goldfarb School of Nursing posted the $893,550 in HEERF III student funds along with an additional $500,000 institutional funds, to total $1,393,550 to 304 students. Two students received $4584.96 and 302 students received $4584.04 at the end of March 2022. Goldfarb used 2021-2022 FAFSA information and these awards went to students with EFCs of 12,000 and below. Students were notified via email that they were receiving the ARP funds for HEERF III.
