Student Services

Nursing school is emotionally challenging, intellectually stimulating, academically rigorous and immensely rewarding. Our student services staff at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College offers comprehensive academic, professional and personal counseling services to ensure you have the right tools for success as you pursue your nursing education.

Academic Advising
Students are assigned an academic advisor by the registration coordinator at the beginning of their program of study. The academic advisor provides academic information, assists with planning a program of study, and acts as a counselor or referral source for other concerns. Students are encouraged to contact their academic advisor at each registration period.

Counseling Services
Counseling Services provides a confidential setting for the psychological, emotional and developmental support of students as they pursue their academic and professional goals. Our student counselor offers personal counseling, group counseling/problem resolution, outreach education, and annual mental health screenings.

Academic Counseling and Retention Programming
At Barnes-Jewish College, we have developed retention programs to assist nursing school students in their coursework to ensure their success. The Peer Leadership Program is a collaborative learning program available for students who would like to engage in and review course material with their peers outside the classroom setting. The Peer Mentoring Program promotes caring and supportive mentoring relationships between “seasoned” students and incoming students. The mentors also encourage student involvement throughout their nursing school years.

In addition, we offer academic counseling to help students acquire more effective and efficient study skills. Our retention coordinator provides one-on-one sessions with students that focus on skills such as: reading, note-taking and test-taking strategies, time management, critical thinking skills, exam preparation, and post-exam analysis. The coordinator also assists student immigrants and international students with Western learning strategies.

Career Services
Career Services assists students in exploring career choices; developing mentoring, shadowing and learning opportunities while in school; and supporting them as they search for a professional position as they conclude their studies. Our career services coordinator works with students individually, in groups, and through workshops and events, in addition to maintaining a library of resources.

Comprehensive services range from providing information on nursing career options, offering shadowing and mentoring opportunities, support with NCLEX applications, to developing resume writing, interview skills, and job search strategies.
